Course Description

Grades K-2: One of the most exciting ways of making art is working with sculptural media to create three-dimensional art forms. In this course, students use sculptural media including wire, plaster, wood, clays and other natural materials to create sculptures, assemblages and installations. In the process, students gain experience with many sculptural forms and media, discover a variety of artists and heighten spatial and kinesthetic awareness. Using sketches and working from observation, memory and imagination, students make personally meaningful work that is inspired by their interests and objects of our everyday world.

NCYP 190: Drawing Workshop (Grades 3-5) $475.00

Course Description

Grades 3-5: For the young artist who loves to draw, this fast-paced course offers a little bit of everything. Students create drawings from memory, observation, imagination, and in response to the art of master artists. Different approaches, tools, materials, and techniques are presented and explored using a diverse range of media, from pen and pencil to color explorations in pastel and paint. With the introduction of each new medium and technique, students create studies and sketches as preparation for several larger, refined pieces for the final art show. Emphasis is on exposure to a variety of traditional and non-traditional drawing media and surfaces, with hands-on process work and experimentation at the heart of learning each new drawing technique or medium.

Course Description

Grades 6-8: In this course, students practice the art of telling stories through pictures. Formal aspects of the narrative are applied by combining the written word with visual sequences. Students learn how storylines are developed, formats are considered and characters created. Observation skill-building helps students develop a basis for their fantasy figures, heroes, and heroines. Each student explores animation techniques and produces a comic strip consisting of several frames as well as a multi-page comic book.

NCYP 250: Painting Techniques and Processes (Grades 6-8) $475.00

Course Description

Grades 6-8: Using a variety of paint media such as inks, watercolor, tempera paint, and acrylic paint, students in this course explore a variety of paint materials, brushes, and techniques, both traditional and non-traditional, to create a body of work that spans realism to expressive abstraction. Emphasis is on breaking "out of the box" in expressive use of color media, with a variety of prompts guiding students to make meaning and incorporate narratives into their work. This is a fast-paced class, with students generating a large body of studies and exercises as they build a strong foundation and comfort with each color medium. The confident painter will then be asked to synthesize this knowledge to create larger, cohesive paintings based on a selected theme.

NCYP 259: Digital Photography (Grades 6-8) $475.00

Course Description

Grades 6-8 Beginning with an understanding of compositional principles and the basic camera functions, features, and possibilities, students learn to create digital photographs. From a variety of prompts intended to tap into students' interpretation and experience of the visual world around them, students collect imagery in their daily lives, at home, and outdoors. As the course progresses, the class explores the Adobe Photoshop program as a tool to refine images and explore options in manipulating imagery for expressive purposes. Note: Students must have their own digital camera (phone or tablet camera or DSLR). Access to the Adobe Creative Suite is included for the duration of this course.
