Course Description

Location: St. Paul's. Grades K-2: Young artists will explore the animal kingdom while learning how to represent an idea both in two-dimensional and three dimensional form. We will pull our inspiration from a variety of fiction and non-fiction books, investigating themes presented, in order to create rich visual concepts. While learning more about animals and their habitats, students will deepen their own personal connections to the world around us. Each class we will explore new ways of illustrating and sculpting animals.

NCSP 108: Up in the Air on the Ground and in the Sea (Grades K-2) $335.00

Course Description

Location: St. Paul. Grades K-2: Let's take a journey into the imagination. Using children’s literature as a starting point for "takeoff," students embark on flights over cities, fast journeys by train over land, and underwater excursions by submarine. As artist-travelers, students create paintings, prints, and drawings of the things they see from a bird's eye view, a bug's-eye view, a fish-eye view, and much, much more. Each journey is an exploration of an unfamiliar habitat, full of new textures, colors, living, creatures, and plant life waiting to be captured in vibrant works of art. Students will use a variety of materials in this course.

NCSP 145: Clay for Little Hands (Grades 3-5) $335.00

Course Description

Location: St. Paul's. Grades: 3-5: Nowhere is there a medium more malleable and versatile than clay. Intended for our youngest artists and framed within an energetic context of play, tactile experiences, exploration and discovery, this course is intended to get students immersed in working creatively to create forms, apply textures, and consider the varieties of surface effects with glaze. Students extrude, roll, press, mold, shape, squeeze, pinch, and drape clay in unusual ways to create beautiful, artful clay objects. Once familiar with the basic characteristics, possibilities and limitations of clay, students will find that the options are virtually endless!

Course Description

Location: St. Paul's School. Grades 6-8: Using a variety of dry and wet color media, students explore the powerful role of color on an artwork’s mood, atmosphere, and overall visual impact. To make informed decisions about color, students first learn color relationships and color theory as they create a series of related compositions that reflect specific color schemes. Throughout the course, students view the works of exemplar painters as inspiration for the infinite ways color can be utilized for stylistic and expressive purposes.

NCSP 236: Make Your Own Comic Book (Grades 3-5) $335.00

Course Description

Location: St. Paul's. Grades 3-5: In this course, students practice the art of telling stories through pictures. Formal aspects of the narrative are applied by combining the written word with visual sequences. Students learn how storylines are developed, formats are considered and characters created. Observation skill-building helps students develop a basis for their fantasy figures, heroes, and heroines. Each student explores animation techniques and produces a comic strip consisting of several frames as well as a multi-page comic book.
