Expressive Portraiture Grades: 6-8. What's on the inside? Personality is more than skin-deep, and who you are is more than what shows up on your face. In this class, students explore multiple media, including: oil pastel, colored inks, and collage to make a series of portraits that emphasize personality and emotion, as well as teach realistic techniques.

Course Description

SCHEDULE INCLUDES - Morning Class-time: 9:30 am - 12 noon; Mid Day Activities: 12 noon - 1:00 pm; Afternoon Class-time: 1:00 - 3:30 pm
Painting Techniques and Processes Grades 9-12. Using a variety of paint media such as inks, watercolor, tempera paint, and acrylic paint, students in this course explore a variety of paint materials, brushes, and techniques, both traditional and non-traditional, to create a body of work that spans realism to expressive abstraction. Emphasis is on breaking "out of the box" in expressive use of color media, with a variety of prompts guiding students to make meaning and incorporate narratives into their work. This is a fast-paced class, with students generating a large body of studies and exercises as they build a strong foundation and comfort with each color medium. The confident painter will then be asked to synthesize this knowledge to create larger, cohesive paintings based on a selected theme.

Course Description

SCHEDULE INCLUDES - Morning Course: 9:30 am - 12 noon; Mid-day Activities 12 noon - 1:00 pm; Afternoon Course: 1:00 - 3:30 pm What Do You See? Grades K-2. Get ready to see the world in a whole new way! This course offers the child a variety of exciting art experiences based upon explorations of his/her immediate world. The child-artists are encouraged to explore the world through experiencing texture, color, line, and shape through use of movement, touch, and sight. Using a variety of drawing media, the child translates his/her world through expressive mark-making and line. From very small to very large drawings, individual work to collaborative murals, this course will open up a world of possibilities.

Course Description

SCHEDULE INCLUDES - Morning Course: 9:30 am - 12 noon -- ; Mid-day Activities: 12 noon - 1:00 pm; Afternoon Course: 1:00 - 3:30 pm Art from Many Hands, Many Cultures Grades 3-5. Do you love to travel to places you have never seen before? This course is a visual journey to all corners of the world. Students open their eyes to the colors, textures and styles of the peoples and places from every continent. From the most remote mountains to bustling cities, students explore the contrasts and similarities of cultures and places around the globe. Working with their travel companions, students collaborate with classmates to select the places to which they will journey, creating art along the way. From Mexican bark-painting, African masks, South American patterns and much, much more, students will create art inspired by the styles and materials of other places.

NCYP LS912: Late Summer One Week Session Grades 9-12 Location $310.00

Course Description

SCHEDULE INCLUDES - Morning Course: 9:30 am - 12 noon -- ; Mid-day Activities: 12 noon - 1:00 pm; Afternoon Course: 1:00 - 3:30 pm Advanced Digital Photography Grades 9-12. This course is for students who understand the basic functions for the digital camera through previous experience. Students will expand on compositional principles to create a series or body of work personal narratives and a series of work. As the course progresses, the class explores the Adobe Photoshop program as a tool to refine images and explore options in manipulating imagery for expressive purposes. This course takes place in a Macintosh graphics lab. Students will be required to take images on the MICA campus as well as capture images outside of class for use on the computer. NOTE: students must bring their digital cameras to each class.
