They design and construct kites, create mobiles, and other art objects that flap, spin, fly, flutter and move. Location: St. Paul's. Grades 6-8. In this course, students develop story lines with vivid special effects and action sequences. By creating images intended to encourage viewers to make predictions the artist becomes a storyteller. Students look at and analyze the narrative works of contemporary illustrators to discover the relationship between the written copy and illustration. A variety of sources are used as reference in developing ideas. These include myths, folk tales, song lyrics, special personal and memorable events, as well as narrative works by master artists.

Location: St. Paul's School. Grades K-2.Do you have a knack for putting together unusual materials to create interesting three-dimensional objects? In this hands-on, multi-media sculptural course, students use additive techniques to attach, glue, twist, stack, tie, dangle and arrange as they explore the ways varied materials can be combined to create expressive forms that may be artful, functional or both. Materials such as found objects, wood, paper and board are used for construction of these innovative sculptures, then they are embellished with a variety of natural and man-made materials. Students are encouraged to use their own artful thinking to find and bring in interesting objects and materials for use in this course.

Grades K-2.For the young artist who loves to draw and wishes to dive into a world of color, this course journeys from mark-making with dry media into the world of paint and other wet media. From looking and sketching exercises to experimentation with color, students will explore how color can be used for expressive purposes. Paint media such as watercolor and tempera paint will be used to explore how colors interact to create various effects, mixed colors, and textures. Emphasis will be on noticing details about the surrounding world and finding ways to communicate experiences with brush-strokes, lines, and splashes of color.

Location: St. Paul's School. Grades 6-8. Designed for students who want to improve drawing skills and work towards more realistic drawings, this course focuses on drawing from observation. Students are guided through a carefully sequenced, step-by-step process designed to develop the student's perception and thinking skills. Based upon exercises in Betty Edwards' Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, this approach has been successful in improving students' ability to draw realistically, even for those who think they cannot draw. As such, it provides the young artist with an excellent bridge between drawing symbolically and working more realistically.

Course Description

Location: St. Paul's School. Grades 9-12. Grades 9-12. The art of bookmaking was once a craft limited to written books. Today, artists use creative and inventive approaches to construct and bind books that tell stories, hold images, or become a journal to hold memories and ideas. The holding form of the book is as artful as the content within. In this class, students explore the book as both an art object as well as a personal and symbolic holding form for written and visual narrative. Students learn techniques for making accordion books, scrolls, bound journals, and much more. Careful consideration is given to the paper types and form chosen to match the overall intent and structure of the book.

NCSP 327: Responsive Drawing $385.00

Course Description

Grades 9-12. Grades 9-12. This is course is for the motivated art student who is looking to enhance their portfolio in not only in technical skills, but in the creative process as it relates to an ability to perceive and respond. Emphasis is placed on developing sensitivity to the marks made on surfaces as well as to the qualities in the object or scenes they refer to. Students will work in an improvisational manner as well as through sustained works as an ongoing process in which the result of one work fuels the ideas and inspiration for the next. Involvement in making informed and critical decisions will be guided through group discussions, research of master artists and self-analysis. Results of the course are intended to advance the artist’s understanding of drawing in the widest possible context and elevating the portfolio to the next level.
