Open Studies Course Registration

ONLINE: Throughout history, the challenge of capturing the changing light in landscape and the expressive possibilities that climate creates have captivated artists from El Greco and Turner, to Corot and Van Gogh. In this course, suitable for all levels and open to all media, students will explore painting techniques for quickly rendering light and atmosphere in the afternoon-evening landscape The instructor will demonstrate a number of methods that offer tangible opportunities for success with quick studies, as well as with more extended compositions. After mastering the basics of depicting form through value, students will explore the nuances of color palettes and paint application to render the emotive qualities of the landscape. Homework assignments will challenge the student to explore different light situations throughout the day.

ONLINE. In this class students will explore different ways to convey feelings through color and facial expression. With an emphasis on personality and emotion, students in this course will paint expressive portraits while learning effective ways to apply paint that go beyond technique to evoke meaning. Examining the work of contemporary artists, students will receive color palette tips for painting various skin tones and facial structures. By the end of this course students will have a series of portraits that explore the relationship between people and space, narrative, and dramatic lighting.
