Course Description

Grades 9-12: Design is everywhere around us and it impacts people’s day-to-day life in powerful ways. In this course students will learn about Design Justice and use its principals to rethink design processes, and analyze design narratives used in society. Students will experiment with typography, logo design, and branding in order to create work that inspires change in the world. The class will work with the Adobe Creative Suite and develop design strategies to communicate clearly through design and digital imagery. Access to the Adobe Creative Suite is included for the duration of this course.

Course Description

Grades 9-12. For the student who needs to round out core drawing skills but wants to do it in the most innovative, fun, exploratory way imaginable, this course is for you! Through experimental drawing using unusual/non-traditional materials and creative art problems set up by the instructor, students gain a repertoire of essential tools and skills for drawing. This course provides students with a strong foundation in contour line, creating value, perspective, mark-making, and sighting as essential tools to render accurately. With this toolbox mastered, students will feel confident that they can draw anything!

NCYP 345: Reimagining Ceramics: Culture and Clay (Grades 9-12) $385.00

Course Description

Grades 9-12: Inspired by the work of Roberto Lugo, in this course, students will learn the functional purpose of ceramics and create meaningful ceramic objects such as pots, plates and bowls. Throughout the course, students will gain proficiency in using a variety of hand building techniques and explore different methods of glazing. Students will learn how ceramics have been used in different cultures, explore personal artifacts, and use both historical and contemporary references as inspiration for their work.

NCYP 349: Unconventional Painting (Grades 9-12) $385.00

Course Description

Grade 9-12: In this course students will use acrylic paint to explore expressive uses of color, color mixing, and color theory. Using a variety of painting surfaces, students will paint in both traditional and unconventional ways, with brushes of various sizes and unconventional tools such as spatulas, squeegees and combs. Through critique and peer feedback, this course offers opportunities for students to think deeply about their work and the meaning behind their paintings.

Grades 9-12: This course is designed for the artist who is a noticer of detail and attracted to the meditative process, patience, and beauty of detail-oriented artworks. This course will explore digital and traditional methods of making including: the art of paper cutting, layered drawing on transparent surfaces, and intricate mark making in 2D and 3D formats. Within these processes, there is potential to explore both abstract and representational ways of working to fit each student's individual interests and style.

Grades 9-12: In this course, students explore different aspects of illustration and sequential art such as cells, comic strips, and graphic novels. Students look at artwork created by several different sequential artists working in a variety of materials. By first developing a storyline, students create original characters and learn how to capture the attention of the readers through sequential illustration, narrative, and image. Students develop their skills in both drawing from life and using their imaginations to craft creative and expressive characters and stories.

NCYP 390: Digital Design for Fiber and Fashion (Grades 9-12) $385.00

Course Description

Grades 9-12: Whether it be hand painted or digitally designed, patterns can be placed on fabric, fashion, accessories, and as wallpaper. Explore traditional hand skills and digital tools in creating designs that will be replicated on Adobe Photoshop to create repeated patterns that can be printed on fabric. You will be introduced to fiber techniques like dyeing and embroidery to enhance your knowledge of the fiber arts and your final designs. If you enjoy combining digital media with traditional hands on processes, Fiber and Graphic Design will inspire you.
