Course Description

Location: St. Pauls. Grades 3-5. In this introductory landscape course, students take a fantastic journey into some truly unusual landscapes. Using children's literature as inspiration, students embark upon fanciful journeys into a colorful world of realistic, personal, and fanciful landscapes. They will create cityscapes, oceanscapes, and scenes from both an insect's point of view and a birds-eye view. From there, they will journey to far-away places to capture moonscapes and underwater seascapes. Emphasis is on problem-solving, exercising the imagination, using writing to enhance fanciful scenes, and experimentation with a variety of materials and techniques.

NCSP 130: Drawing Workshop for Children (Grades 3-5) $385.00

Course Description

Location: St. Pauls. Grades 3-5. For the young artist who loves to draw, this fast-paced course offers a little bit of everything. Students create drawings from memory, observation, imagination, and in response to the art of master artists. Different approaches, tools, materials and techniques are presented and explored using a diverse range of media, from pen and pencil to color explorations in pastel and paint. With the introduction of each new medium and technique, students create studies and sketches as preparation for several larger, refined pieces for the final art show. Emphasis is on exposure to a variety of traditional and non-traditional drawing media and surfaces, with hands-on process work and experimentation at the heart of learning each new drawing technique or medium.

Grades 6-8: In this course, middle school students explore and apply ways in which disparate imagery and materialscan be arranged to create compositions that are both aesthetically pleasing and expressive of ideas and feelings. Students explore the potential of a variety of ideas, images and materials in designing and creating compositions of subject and topics that have personal meaning. Using a balance of found images and created images, students are encouraged to create narrative works, with equal emphasis on treatment of the work's surface, choice and arrangement of images, and selection of media.

Explore how a self-portrait is created, beginning with the traditional self-portrait and then branching into thematic and/or color conceptual ideas about self as the basis for composing self-portraits that may or may not include a ace. Students begin with observational work using mirrors and dray drawing media, then express themselves via self-portrait in unusual, meaningful and innovative ways, problem solving ideas from beginning to end, analyzing the efficacy of developing images (self as well as peers) and developing a repertoire of visual thinking techniques.
