CSPD 265: Information Visualization Basics $880.00

Course Description

This introductory class will explore the types of powerful, data-driven visual narratives that are rising in demand across industries. Students will be introduced to “big data” and various design strategies to effectively distill complex information through a compelling visual narrative. This course is intended for both designers and non-designers interested in understanding basic tools and skills involved in information visualization. Instructor: Samantha Winters ’15 (Information Visualization M.P.S.) pushes boundaries of data and information design, art and science. Her research builds on work with the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute where she developed a process to quantify and visualize qualitative data as a tool to explore the connection between collaboration and discovery. Sam has been a practicing designer for the past decade. She holds a B.F.A. in graphic design from Salisbury University and a master’s from MICA.

Course Description

It’s time to get personal! Everyone has a personality and story that define them and shapes their value. Yet, not everyone grasps how to be strategic and consistent so they may cultivate an effective personal brand. Do you want a job, customers or brand advocates? This course will cover the basics of branding and empower students to create a dynamic personal brand that can resonate with their client base, as well as adapt to career advancements. Students will also learn the power of “influencers,” effective story-telling, technological tricks to drive business, and how to grow areas of unique areas of expertise. Instructor: Dr. Talaya Waller is an international personal branding consultant who uses a research-based methodology to increase clients’ positioning in their industries. She has worked with a diverse range of clients from judges to entrepreneurs to Fortune 500 company executives and universities. In 2015, Talaya earned a Doctorate of Business Administration with a concentration in Leadership. In 2011, she completed an Executive Education at Harvard. She also holds an MBA and a bachelor's degree in Managerial Sciences with a concentration in Entrepreneurship.

Adobe XD software is an ideal software for productive artists who want to prototype their websites or apps quickly. This course is perfect for emerging or current UX/UI designer. Projects will allow students to create designs that are suitable for various devices, like tablets and mobile phones. Students will also learn how to integrate Illustrator and Photoshop files into their interactive prototype. Projects such as the creation of a website and apps by setting up artboards, importing text and images along with symbols, and repeat grids to quickly design and layout more complex pages will round out the class. CSPD 415: Advanced Adobe Creative Suite $660.00

Course Description

New! In this course, students will create more sophisticated designs using Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, and Lightroom. Building on the skills learned from each of the programs. Students will integrate the various programs while creating multiple projects, including illustrations, image manipulation and correction, page layout, and online pdfs. Knowledge of the Creative Suite is essential in developing more exceptional skills with these applications. Instructor: Randy Morgan, owner of Studio IX, has worked with interactive design, print media and digital imaging since 1992. He is also an exhibiting artist, working with traditional and digital media. His works can be found in private collections throughout North America, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia.
